Tura, Apr 24: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that temperature would continue to rise for the next four days in Garo Hills. The current temperature in most parts of Garo Hills have been ranging above 34 degree centigrade.
On Wednesday, Tura recorded temperature rise of around 34-37°C, Baghmara 39°C, Ampati 39 – 40°C, Williamnagar 36°C, plaint bet area of Garo Hills Rajabala, Phulbari and Tikrikilla recorded temperature as high as 41-42°C.
A bulletin released by IMD Shillong said that in the next four days temperature would rise further between 1-2°C at a few places over the districts of Garo Hills. “Hot & Humid weather condition is likely to prevail at isolated places over the districts of South West Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, North Garo Hills and South Garo Hills”, the report said.
Yesterday maximum temperature were in range of 34-37°C in many parts of districts under Garo Hills and 23- 29°C in parts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills. Maximum temperature departures were above normal by 1.5-5.1°C at isolated places.
The report said heat is tolerable for general public but slight heath concern for vulnerable people, viz., infant, elderly, pregnant women and sick people.
An advisory suggested precautionary measures to maintain the body temperature.
To beat the heat, experts advised hydration amid rising temperatures, they recommend increasing fluid intake as a preventive measure, replenishing lost salt and minerals due to heavy sweating. They also recommend sports drinks as a means of restoring electrolyte balance.
However, they also suggest that those with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, to seek medical guidance before consuming such beverages or salt supplements.
Authorities have urged the residents to take precautionary measures to stay safe in the rising temperatures. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothes to stay cool. Cover your head with a hat or use an umbrella when going out during peak hours to avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Farmers and outdoor workers are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours of the day.
