Guwahati, April 20: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India convened a statutory full commission meet on Friday to address the critical issues and safeguard child rights issues for the welfare of the society.

Chairpersons of all seven National Commissions, including the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) were present for the meet.

Priyank Kanoongo, Chairperson of the NCPCR, said that proactive measures are adopted by the commission to safeguard children’s rights nationwide. Kanoongo emphasized on monitoring of eight portals by the NCPCR to ensure comprehensive oversight in this domain.

Kanoongo highlighted the successful monitoring and subsequent rehabilitation of over one lakh orphaned children. Through concerted efforts, these children have been reintegrated into families.

The NCPCR has played a pivotal role in implementing stringent measures to combat substance abuse among children. By advocating installation of CCTV cameras in chemist shops, the commission aims to thwart the illicit distribution of drugs to minors, thereby stemming the menace of substance abuse from its inception.

In its unwavering commitment to uphold child rights, the NCPCR has issued nine comprehensive guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) to ensure protection mechanisms. The commission has made significant contributions by generating 19 research reports over the years, shedding light on pertinent issues.
