Guwahati, April 8: In a new report released on World Health Day 2024, highlighted a trend of rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across India. The report revealed staggering statistics, indicating that one in three Indians is pre-diabetic, two in three are pre-hypertensive, and one in ten suffers from depression, the report also highlighted the alarming rise in cancer cases nationwide.

As per an earlier report released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) North East topped the list in cancer cases in the country, with Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district and Aizawl in Mizoram recorded the highest incidence of cancer cases in the country among females and males respectively, as per a government report.

The report further stated that NCDs are now appearing at increasingly younger ages, pointing towards a potential surge in healthcare burdens in the near future. The report emphasised on the crucial role of regular health screenings, the report emphasized that screenings play an important role in identifying and mitigating risks associated with NCDs, particularly cardiac-related ailments. However, despite the importance of early detection and prevention, there remains a significant gap in widespread health check-ups.

Northeast India, which had emerged as the cancer capital of the country, according to the report, the estimated number of cancer cases in the region in 2020 was 50,317, with 27,503 cases among males and 22,814 among females. This statistic underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions and improved healthcare infrastructure in the region to address the growing burden of cancer and other NCDs.
