Shillong, April 26: In view of the scorching heat wave which continues to affect the entire State, the Government of Meghalaya in a notification on Friday has directed all schools to follow strict precautions and guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of the students and staff.

In an order signed by the Director of School Education & Literacy, Swapnil Tembe, it directs all schools not to organize any outdoor activities or sports during this ongoing heatwave and also during any future instances of heatwaves.

It also directed the school to provide adequate hydration facilities throughout the school premises, including access to drinking water and shaded areas.

In cases of severe dehydration, the student should be immediately taken to the nearest health facility, stated the order.

The temperature recorded in Shillong on Friday at 12:00 PM is 28°C, in Nongpoh, it is at 33°C, and in Tura, the temperature is at a boiling 35°C.

Therefore, the Government of Meghalaya has also suggested that all students stay hydrated by drinking water regularly and to bring their own water bottles. The order directs the schools in the State to make provision of ORS/lemon water available in case some students face dehydration.

During the period from 12 pm to 3 pm, the government suggested that schools should avoid exposing students to direct heat, but if necessary, students should be encouraged to use caps or umbrellas while coming to and going from schools.

The order also prohibits students to walk barefoot inside or near the school premises.

The State government has also urged the local authorities, emergency services and healthcare services collaboration with the schools. Also suggesting that schools should be in touch with the nearest health facility and to keep their contact details handy.
