Guwahati, April 14: The Jorhat Lok Sabha seat is going to witness a tough fight between two top political leaders BJP’s MP Topon Kumar Gogoi and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi.
Both the leaders are from Ahom community. Ahom voters constitute a whopping 32.25 per cent of the total 17 lakh voters in Jorhat constituency, both candidates are heavily relying on the support of these voters to emerge victorious in the election.
The Ahom community, known for its political influence in Assam, holds the key to victory in the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat. They are the deciding factor in Jorhat seat and in every elections they play a crucial role.
“The Ahom voters, numbering around 5.5 lakh, will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the election in the prestigious constituency. Topon Kumar Gogoi is already an MP of BJP from Jorhat seat and Gaurav Gogoi will be contesting the Jorhat seat for the first time. Both the leaders are campaigning hard to appease the voters,” said Rupak Bhattacharjee, a political analyst.
With the redrawn boundaries of his previous constituency, Kaliabor, Gaurav has made a strategic move to contest from Jorhat, where his father had also previously won elections in 1971 and 1977.
In the 2019 elections, Topon Kumar Gogoi defeated Congress candidate Sushanta Borgohain by a margin of 82,653 votes in the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, while Gaurav Gogoi emerged victorious in the Kaliabor Lok Sabha seat by defeating the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Moni Madhav Mahanta by a margin of 2,09,994 votes.
The battle for the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat has emerged as a high-voltage showdown between Topon Kumar Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi, with the Ahom voters at the centre of the political discourse.
