Actress Nivetha Thomas, known for her role in Ninnu Kori, will lead the cast of an upcoming biopic of the famed Burra Katha artist, Garividi Pedda Laxmi. The film will be directed by debutante Gowri. Renowned production banner, People Media Factory, will finance the biopic that is currently in the pre-production stage. More news on the rest of the cast and crew are awaited.
What is Burrakatha?
Burra Katha or Burrakatha, is an oral storytelling technique in the Jangam Katha tradition, performed in villages of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The troupe consists of one main performer and two co-performers. It is a narrative entertainment that consists of prayers, solo drama, dance, songs, poems and jokes, and Garividi Pedda Laxmi is a stalwart who has been hailed for her voice. Burrakatha tellers are called Budagajangalu. Over the years, burrakatha performances are not being seen as frequently, and there is no one to develop this dying art form. In the past, burrakatha tellers were important in the villages; now there is no response for their art, so the makers will be bringing this art form to the mainstream with this film.
Back to Telugu cinema after 2 years
As for Nivetha Thomas, this will be her first attempt at a biography. The actress was last seen in Telugu in the 2021 film Vakkeel Saab and in the 2022 film Saakini Daakini with Regina Cassandra, and in Malayalam with Enthada Saji in 2023.
