New Delhi: The Delhi University has featured as the best Indian universities in the QS World University Sustainability rankings 2024 released on Tuesday, December 5. DU has bagged rank 220 and it’s the only Indian university in the top 200 list. The university has also placed in 16th spot in the QS Environmental Education indicator ranking.
A total of 56 Indian universities have made the cut in the QS ranking. Seven IITs have featured in the QS rankings- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Bombay) bagged rank 303, IIT Madras- rank 344, IIT Kharagpur- rank 349, IIT Roorkee- rank 387, IIT Delhi- rank 426, IIT Kanpur- rank 522, IIT Varanasi- rank 684.

Meanwhile, though Indian universities did not perform well in global sustainability rankings, it’s making an impact in specific areas. In the Environmental Sustainability indicator, four Indian universities have secured top 100 positions globally, with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) securing 49th place globally.
As per the QS report, “India could look to improve factors related to QS’ Good Governance indicator, such as ethics, hiring practices, transparency and decision-making. In this metric, two Indian universities are among the world’s top 200, with Manipal Academy of Higher Education and the University of Delhi placing 111th and 167th respectively.”
Globally, University of Toronto, Canada topped the list with rank 1 followed by University of California- rank 2, The University of Manchester- rank 3. University of British Columbia, Canada secured rank 4, University of Auckland, New Zealand- rank 5, Imperial College London, United Kingdom- rank 6, University of Sydney, Australia- rank 7, Lund University, Sweden- rank 8, University of Melbourne, Australia- rank 9, Western University, Canada- rank 10.
