NEW DELHI: In a bid to revive its tourism sector, Thailand has introduced an innovative scheme offering visitors up to $14,000 in medical coverage in the event of accidents. The Thailand Traveller Safety scheme, initiated on January 1 and set to continue until August 31, aims to instill confidence in foreign tourists about the country’s safety measures.
Under the new scheme, the government will cover medical expenses of up to 500,000 baht ($14,000) and provide compensation of up to one million baht in the unfortunate event of a tourist’s death. Tourism Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol emphasized that the campaign is designed to reassure visitors that Thailand prioritizes their safety and well-being.
Thailand’s tourism sector suffered a severe blow due to travel restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite efforts to bounce back, the recovery has been slower than anticipated. The kingdom, renowned for its allure among global backpackers seeking sun, sand, and adventure, is now making strides to address safety concerns, especially related to accidents that can result in significant medical expenses.
While accidents are not uncommon among tourists, the Thai government is clear that the new scheme will not cover incidents caused by “negligence, intent, illegal acts,” or risky behavior. Tourists interested in availing themselves of this coverage can register through the Thailand Traveller Safety website at tts.go.th.
In 2023, Thailand welcomed 28 million visitors, showing improvement from the previous year but still below the pre-pandemic levels of 40 million in 2019. With hopes of further recovery, officials have set a target of attracting 35 million visitors in 2024, aiming for $55 billion in revenue. The Thailand Traveller Safety scheme is seen as a crucial step in regaining the confidence of international tourists and revitalizing the nation’s tourism industry.
