Shillong, April 6: The heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm on Sunday lashed parts of West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, and East Khasi Hills Districts, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of houses. This was reported by Matsiewdor War Nongbri, Secretary of the Revenue & Disaster Management Department.

According to Nongbri, six villages under Eastern West Khasi Hills have been affected by the heavy rain and hailstorm, with over 62 houses reported damaged. These villages include Nongkhlaw, Mawiongkhri, Nongthyllep, Mawnai, Umshyiap, Phudbah, and Demdngiem. Nongbri also stated that over 172 residents of these villages have been affected, and approximately 50 hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed.

Furthermore, Nongbri mentioned that 21 houses were reported damaged in Mawlynrei Village, located in the Mawryngkneng Block of the East Khasi Hills District. In West Khasi Hills, over 52 houses and more than 200 people have been affected by the rain and hailstorm.

The Secretary of the Revenue & Disaster Management Department further informed that a storm hit Malangkhasi and Malangkona Circle on Sunday, affecting five people. Villages in West Khasi Hills, including Mawlieh Circle, Byrki Circle, Mawthor Circle, Mawlangsu Circle, and Mawdoh Circle, have also been affected by the heavy downpour and hailstorm.

Nongbri stated that 52 houses have been affected under Nongstoiñ Block, with over 135 people affected in Mawlieh Circle, 45 in Byrki Circle, and 15 each in Mawthor Circle, Mawlangsu Circle, and Mawdoh Circle. Approximately 40 people have been affected by the rain and hailstorm in Mawlangsu and Mawdoh Circle.

Additionally, Nongbri informed that the affected people have been shifted to temporary shelters arranged by the office of the Deputy Commissioner and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMO) Office.

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has also directed all District Administration to provide relief to all affected families.
