Guwahati, May 7: The election commission in Assam’s Bijni launched an investigation after a video surfaced on social media showing an elector casting his vote inside the voting compartment. He also recorded the display in the VVPAT machine after casting his vote.

The Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) in Bijni in Assam’s Bongaigaon district has taken cognizance of an alleged violation of the model code of conduct (MCC) during the ongoing third phase elections.

According to a press note released by the District Election Branch, Bijni, an Instagram user named “Kamal Azad” (user id-azad-achilles) shared a video of vote casting inside the voting compartment of PS No. 157, 99 No—Bagorgaon LP School (Room No.2).

In the video, the elector allegedly records pressing the button of the Voting Machine and the slip printed after the vote. In the video posted on the popular social media platform, he openly supports a party candidate.

Under the model code of conduct, using mobile phones or cameras inside a polling station is strictly prohibited. This compromises the secrecy of the ballot and can lead to undue influence on voters.

The Election Department has launched an investigation and is taking the issue seriously.
