Guwahati, May 9: In a significant break from a 36-year-old tradition, the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has announced that there will be no top position holders in this year’s Higher Secondary examination results.
Breaking away from the traditional practice of announcing top position holders in Arts, Science, and Commerce categories, the AHSEC Secretary, Pulak Patgiri, emphasized that the decision to eliminate the ranking system was made to discourage unhealthy competition among students.
The debate surrounding the merits and drawbacks of the ranking system led to discussions within the examination committee, ultimately resulting in the historic decision to abolish the practice of declaring top position holders.
In response to the announcement, students welcomed the move, stating that it has relieved them from the pressure and emotional strain associated with competing for top positions. Cotton College students expressed their support for the decision, affirming that it aligns with the principles of fairness and equality.
Regarding the distribution of certificates, AHSEC assured students that hard copies would be provided within 10 to 15 days, and arrangements would be made for those requesting copies of their external photographs through the AHSEC website.
The decision by AHSEC marks a significant shift in the education system’s approach towards assessment and recognition, emphasizing the importance of fostering a healthy learning environment devoid of undue competition.
