Chow Chow Bath, Kannada cinema’s first hyperlink Rom-Com (romantic comedy) film, has completed 50 days in theatres, a rare accomplishment in the present scenario considering the several challenges they face, including those at the box office and due to the OTT platform. While only a few big star and big budget films made by premiere production houses have managed to run for 50 to 100 days in theatres, Chow Chow Bath has been an exception.
Theatrical run
Released on March 15, the director of the film, Kenja Chethan Kumar told Times Now that the movie had completed its fifth week in select theatres in Mangaluru, Mysuru, Bengaluru and in Surathkal. The film completed 50 days in the Cine Galaxy theatre in Surathkal with Bharath Cinemas in Mangaluru stopping the film’s run in its seventh week.
“We could have pushed the film for a few more days but we did not want to do it just for the sake of showing the number of days,” said the director.
He adds that the film was screened to packed houses like in the case of star actors and directors in the recent Bengaluru International Film Festival. “I have never experienced such a response in my career. I was so thrilled and happy. When the film was released in theatres, it received positive reviews and that helped the reach of the film to a bit,” Chethan shares.
Modest budget
The entire film including expenses towards promotion was about Rs 90 lakhs for Chow Chow Bath, the director states.
“If the same film had been made in Malayalam, it would have made good money. We do not know the exact reason, but Kannada film industry has and never will be low on content or making. It just seems to be a bad phase for Sandalwood. In our case, it was a minimal budget, and we were still finding it difficult to sustain. Recently, movies with good content and more money being spent on promotion are struggling to even recover the budget,” Chethan points out.
He signed off saying that Tamil director Lokesh Kangaraj’s Maanagaram inspired him to come up with Chow Chow Bath.
