While it continues to dominate the box office, undeterred by recent releases, reports have surfaced that director Jithu Madhavan’s gangster comedy Aavesham, starring Fahadh Faasil in the lead role, is gearing up for its OTT premiere. These reports have surprised moviegoers, especially considering the film’s continuing strong performance at the box office even in its fourth week in theatres.
While industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, who recently took to X (formerly Twitter), announced that Aavesham will debut on OTT on May 9, exactly 28 days after its theatrical release, GQ India, however, reported on Sunday that the film will have its digital premiere only on May 17. Despite the discrepancy on the release date, both reports confirm that Prime Video has secured the OTT rights for the movie. However, an official confirmation from the film’s makers is still pending.

On its 26th day in theatres, Aavesham recorded an India nett collection of Rs 1.1 crore, bringing its total domestic collection to Rs 80.7 crore. In fact, Aavesham achieved a day 26 collection comparable to that of Manjummel Boys, the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. On its 26th day in theatres, Manjummel Boys had earned an India nett of Rs 1.55 crore. It is at a time like this that reports regarding Aavesham’s OTT premiere have emerged, causing many to raise their eyebrows.

On Monday, Aavesham attained an impressive overall occupancy rate of 25.47 per cent in the Malayalam market. The morning shows started with a 16.26 per cent occupancy, which increased to 22.32 per cent during the afternoon, 27.04 per cent during the evening screenings and peaked at 36.25 per cent at night.
In his review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Anandu Suresh wrote, “Jithu Madhavan’s gangster comedy is arguably Fahadh Faasil’s first all-encompassing masala film and the actor unabashedly uses it to silence all the criticisms against him that he can’t handle mass characters.”
