Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh has been appointed as Chancellor of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for a period of five years. The Union Ministry of Education issued the order of his appointment on Friday.
Singh has served as the chairperson for the University Grants Commission (UGC), the apex higher education regulatory body in India from 2018-2021. Professor Singh has held several academic leadership positions in Indian higher education in a career spanning close to four decades.
He led three universities as Vice-Chancellor—Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi; Dr. H. S. Gour University, Sagar, and Devi Ahilya University in Indore. He also headed National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, as director.
He has contributed as member (ex officio) of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, RUSA, Implementation Committee of National Education Policy 2020, etc.
Meanwhile, in the ongoing row over suspension of a PhD student from TISS, more than 600 TISS alumni have endorsed statements in support of PhD student Ramadas Prini Sivanandan, calling for a repeal of his suspension.
