Top three popular Kannada film directors – Puttanna Kanagal, Shankar Nag and Upendra
The Telugu Film Industry observes May 4 as Director’s Day to mark the birth anniversary of legendary film director Dasari Narayana Rao. The same is acknowledged across various other Indian film industries especially down South in remembering their legendary directors and their immense contribution to the film industry.
The Kannada film industry it has witnessed some of the finest from the black and white era to the latest and advanced filmmaking processes.
Here are the three most popular Kannada directors, known for their unique style of filmmaking and their contributions in brief.
Puttanna Kanagal
The legendary Puttanna Kanagal is undoubtedly one of the best and finest directors the Kannada film industry has ever witnessed. The maverick was much ahead of his times, and started his onscreen journey with the Malayalam movie, School Master, a remake of his mentor B R Panthulu. Following a couple of his films, his first Kannada film, Belli Moda, based on the novel penned by noted writer Triveni won the best State Film Award.
He never looked back thereafter. He died while making Masanada Hoovu. A majority of his works were based on novels.
While it’s hard to pick the best of his works, films like Mallammana Pavada, Gejje Pooja, Sharapanjara, Nagarahaavu, Ranganayaki are just a few among his long list of works. His portrayal of women in his works is a true hallmark in the Kannada film industry. Also, he has the highest success rate at the box office too.
Shankar Nag
Shankar Nag, who, despite passing away at the age of 35 in a tragic accident, has certainly left an indelible mark on Kannada cinema. A genius, Shankar Nag was a filmmaker who was ahead of his times. He is considered the best and was the first director to turn a successful actor. Starting with Minchinta Ota which won an award, he directed eight films apart from acting in several films, both commercial and parallel films.
He attained national stardom for directing his television series Malgudi Days.
Upendra
Like Shankar Nag, Upendra is an intelligent director as well as a star actor. Real star Upendra made his directorial debut with Tharle Nan Maga in 1992. His latest much anticipated work UI is inching closer to release. His mentor, Kashinath, is another popular Kannada film director and an actor, who created a niche for himself. Upendra’s Shhh!, A, Om, Upendra are amongst his popular works.
