Guwahati, April 30: Guwahati parliamentary constituency will witness a direct fight between two women candidates Mira Borthakur Goswami from INC and Bijuli Kalita Medhi from BJP.
The parliamentary constituency has more than 20.19 lakh votes. The constituency goes to the polls in the third phase on May 7 along with Barpeta, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar.
Both the candidates are campaigning hard and participating in every small meeting to appease the voters.
Both Goswami and Medhi are debutants and how they will appease the voters to vote in support will be an interesting one to watch.
Guwahati city has been grappling with many issues viz. artificial flooding, traffic jams, pollution and many more and how the candidates will fight with the issues and appease the voters will be interesting.
The Guwahati Lok Sabha seat comprises 10 assembly segments including Dudhani, Boko, Chaygaon, Palasbari, Jalukbari, Dispur, Guwahati east, Guwahati west, Hajo and Barkhetry.
The first woman to win the seat was Renuka Devi Barkakati of the Janata Party in 1977. The second was the BJP’s Bijoya Chakravarty, a former Union minister in 1999.
Chakravarty wrested the seat from Kirip Chaliha of Congress in 2009 and retained it in 2014 before the BJP replaced her with Queen Ojha.
In 2019 Queen Ojha from BJP won the Guwahati seat with a margin of 345,606 votes against INC candidate Bobbeeta Sharma.
The Guwahati seat has been represented by stalwarts like Rohini Kumar Choudhury, who was also a member of the constituent assembly of India, in 1952, Hema Barua, one of the tallest literary and socialist figures of Assam, in 1957 and 1962 and Dinesh Goswami, former law minister in 1971 and 1985.
“A direct fight will be witnessed between INC candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami and BJP candidate Bijuli Kalita Medhi in Guwahati Lok Sabha seat. Guwahati Lok Sabha seat was a women dominated seat because most of the times the seat has been won by a woman candidate. BJP has been trying to retain the seat but Congress has put up a strong fight to win the seat,” said Bipul Medhi, a resident of Guwahati.
Medhi said, “Artificial flood is one of the major issues in Guwahati in this election. We have been combating artificial floods for several years but it has not been solved till date. From Tarun Gogoi’s time, it has been one of the major problems of the city. But it has not been addressed by any of the government”.
