Guwahati, April 24: Badruddin Ajmal, the founder president of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Lok Sabha MP, announced that his party is preparing to challenge the closure of madrassas in Assam by the state government in the Supreme Court.

During an election campaign in Karimganj, Ajmal stated, “The 750 madrassas that were closed in Assam, we will open them through the Supreme Court.”

Ajmal had challenged Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a previous election rally and pledged to establish 700 new madrassas if he wins the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Ajmal drew a comparison with the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to close madrassas, which the Supreme Court condemned. He expressed confidence that they would secure a favorable order from the court. “With this reference, we will go to the Supreme Court and get the order from there,” he stated.

Throughout his election campaign, Ajmal has consistently brought up the issue of madrassa closures in the state, using it as a key talking point. He has promised to open 700 new madrassas in the state after the elections.

In Assam, as many as 1281 madrasas have been transformed and rebranded into Middle English (ME) schools. These schools are spread across 21 districts within the state, predominantly in the minority dominated lower Assam region and the districts of the Barak Valley.

Ajmal has been highlighting this issue at his election rallies to ‘woo’ voters in the minority belt.
