KOLKATA: Last year, he had stopped Hindu Mahasabha representatives from entering Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan. On Monday, however, Left Front chairman Biman Bose showed more affection towards BJP’s Kolkata North candidate Tapas Roy. Not only did Bose allow him to enter the Bengal CPM headquarters, but also offered him a cup of tea.
Roy was out on campaign and as he reached Alimuddin Street, he decided to visit Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan.”North Kolkata is my constituency and Biman da stays there. He is a voter from my constituency and meeting him was a natural choice,” said Roy.
For decades, Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan had been a no-go zone for BJP candidates. BJP candidates like Rahul Sinha never even tried to go to the CPM headquarters. Last year, a team of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha tried to meet CPM functionaries to offer Bijoya greetings. A notice board was hung on the main gate asking “communal” forces to stay away. On Monday, however, Bose told a party worker,”Let him (Roy) come. We shouldn’t confuse Tapas with Hindu Mahasabha’s context.”
Bose moved from his earlier residence at Beniapukur commune and started residing at Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan in 2006 after the death of former CPM state secretary Anil Biswas.
Roy, accompanied by north Kolkata BJP functionary Tamaghna Ghosh, stayed in the CPM headquarters for around 10 minutes. “I have met him earlier too at social gatherings. He is a wonderful and affectionate person. We may belong to opposing political ideologies, but he was always nice to me,” Roy told after meeting Bose. Before Roy left, Bose asked him to take care of his health during campaigning.
