Shillong, April 15: The three-day of Shad Suk Mynsiem festival came to an end on Monday, witnessing several of the tribal Khasi men and women participating in the thanksgiving dance amidst heavy rainfall.
This annual thanksgiving marks the end of the harvesting season, typically in April, with a jubilant display of tradition and unity.
Translated as ‘the dance of peaceful hearts’, Shad Suk Mynsiem embodies the essence of joy and spiritual fulfilment. Women symbolize seeds, while men represent the cultivators in this symbolic dance for a blissful soul.
The festival began on April 13 and concluded on Monday at madan weiking with more than 500 dancers in total.
At Shad Suk Mynsiem, the dance steals the spotlight, accompanied by captivating music.
In Hynniewtrep society, men serve as advisors, leaders, and guardians, reflected in the intricate rituals of Shad Suk Mynsiem. It’s a dance of tradition and symbolism, showcasing the harmonious balance of roles within these unique cultural dynamics.
Female dancers wear silk costumes with gold, coral, and silver accessories. Crown represents dignity and modesty, while lasubon flower represents chastity. Women in Shad Suk Mynsiem must be virgins, while no such requirement applies to men.
