NEW DELHI: Search crews have discovered the wreckage of a small plane that crashed into the ocean off the California coast, near San Francisco. The crash was initially reported around 7 pm on Sunday, near Half Moon Bay, following distress signals from the aircraft, as reported by KRON-TV.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the overturned plane was found in the water near Ross Cove, approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of San Francisco.Officials are currently on-site, inspecting the wreckage for further details.
At this moment, crucial information regarding the number of individuals on board, potential survivors, and the specific type of aircraft involved remains unavailable.
Eyewitnesses, including Melissa Richter, recounted the harrowing experience. Richter, who was dining on a patio at Moss Beach Distillery, described hearing the engine lose power, a sound reminiscent of scenes from movies where a plane is on the brink of crashing. The plane, she mentioned, passed over the top of the building, prompting concerns due to its proximity to the restaurant.
“We figured something was wrong because it was so close to the restaurant,” Richter told KRON. She added that the engine cut out, and the plane “banked in, and we lost sight of it at that point.”
According to Sheriff’s Sgt Philip Hallworth, the ill-fated plane originated from the East Bay. However, he declined to disclose the exact airport from which it took off.
