When the whole country was suffering in the agony of the disastrous Adipurush teaser, Prashanth Varma dropped a glimpse for his upcoming and one of the most ambitious projects titled Hanu Man.
Though the teaser for Hanu Man didn’t catch many eyeballs, it definitely amplified some flak against the makers of Adipurush, who were bombarded with comments like, ‘This is how you make an engaging film using our cultural elements in a limited budget,’ in context of this Telugu action drama.
The promotional material for Hanu Man looked promising and it had an overall good buzz in all the language belts.
So, to cleanse my mythological palette after Adipurush, I stepped into the theatre to watch Hanu Man and by the climax, I was shocked!
The plot (spoiler-free)
Contradicting its title, the film starts with the backstory of a superhero who has been driven by greed and power, which eventually makes him a supervillain. On the other side, we are introduced to Hanumant, a petty thief who gains superstrength and becomes the saviour of his village. As different events unfold, both of these superhumans cross paths, resulting in mass annihilation, which has to be stopped at any cost.
The biggest selling point – The conviction
When you are handling a film that deals with a mythological subject and elements deeply rooted in our culture, then only three things matter — vision, conviction, and execution.
We have seen some iconic examples of vision and conviction in films like Baahubali, Magadheera, and Chennai to China, but it is still a double-edged sword that might wound a filmmaker’s credibility.

Yes, Hanu Man has physics-defying actions and stunts and the mass moments that we have seen a thousand times in gazillions of south-Indian films, but still, it doesn’t appear cringe because all of it is justified in the script.

The comedy in the film is also spot-on, and the makers have roasted the south Indian films’ popular nonsensical action sequences. That seems a bit ironic, but with Prashanth’s intent, it makes you laugh genuinely.
The VFX
I will agree that this film doesn’t have the greatest VFX, but the screenplay is so tight and engaging that you will not feel a second of boredom or disconnect with the story.
The climax of Hanu Man will definitely put a smile on your face and excite you for its upcoming sequel, ‘Jai Hanuman’.

Hanu Man is not perfect, yet an ambitious knot between entertainment and mythology, which definitely deserves your attention because this is an honest attempt at filmmaking and is the perfect antidote for Adipurush.
