KOLKATA: A 43-year-old man who was diagnosed with a rare but life-threatening vascular condition underwent a successful life saving surgery in a Kolkata hospital. Sandip Bose is now recovering well after the minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery.
Bose, a resident of Sodepur in North 24 Parganas, was getting down from his motorbike last month when he suddenly felt sharp pain in his stomach and back. He consulted neurologists and gastroenterologists, but it turned out that he had suffered an aortic dissection, a life-threatening condition where the wall of the aorta ruptures and blood flows out of the heart, causing severe internal bleeding.
“Aortic dissection is rarely seen in those below 50 years. Aortic ruptures can happen due to uncontrolled blood pressure or due to genetic reasons. This patient’s aorta had ruptured, and blood was bypassing the usual channels and flowing freely into his body but not reaching the brain or the limbs. In his case, the aortic dissection had affected around 75% of his body,” said cardiovascular Surgeon, Dr Shubhabrata Banerjee, of AMRI Salt Lake where the patient underwent the procedure.
The patient was admitted to the Salt Lake hospital on December 26 and the surgery was done the next day. Dr Banerjee and his team made a small incision in the patient’s groin and with the help of a catheter, implanted a stent in his aorta, essentially sealing the rupture and ensuring that blood flowed throughout the circulation system. The ruptured part of the aortic wall will heal by itself and eventually grow back into its place, the cardiovascular surgeon said.
“None of my problems persist after the surgery. I’m grateful to Dr Banerjee for giving me a new life,” said Bose who is now back home and gradually getting back to normal life.
