KOLKATA: Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Thursday dropped in at the Calcutta High Court Bar Association office with a “fresh beginning in the new year” message, prompting the association to call off its indefinite boycott of his court.
The association had on Monday announced the boycott of Justice Gangopadhyay’s court after one of its members, Prosenjit Mukherjee, was disrobed and ordered by the judge to be taken in the sheriff’s custody. But the “three-day civil arrest” ordered by Justice Gangopadhyay was stayed by a Calcutta HC division bench late on Monday evening.
“Let us keep aside the grievances and the agony as the year draws to an end,” Justice Gangopadhyay said as he spent some time talking to advocates at the association chambers.
Bar association members resolved to resume work taking note of Justice Gangopadhyay’s visit and his appeal, secretary Biswabrata Basu Mallick said.
Earlier on Thursday, several litigants pleaded their own case in Justice Gangopadhyay’s court as lawyers, including those representing the state, stayed away.
While staying the lawyer’s “civil arrest” on Monday evening, the HC’s division bench had cited several Supreme Court judgments, saying it was legally “well settled” that “the maintenance of purity of administration of justice, so as to uphold the independence of the judiciary, is a sole task of the courts”. The bench of Justices Harish Tandon and Hiranmay Bhattacharyya added that restraint and humility was necessary for judges to command respect, as well as to protect the judiciary’s independence.
